GHANA

The area covered by the Home Based Care Project is 6,400 square miles, 7% of the total land mass of Ghana. The Upper East Region lies in the top right (NE) corner of Ghana where you can see Bolgatanga, the largest town.

The project area also extends into the Northern Region, which lies to the south of Upper East. The population in this combined area is 1,500,000, of whom more than 600,000 are under 15 years of age. The only transport is by bus; there are no trains or planes, and the nearest airport is at Tamale. The major arterial roads are tarmaced, albeit of variable quality. Off these roads are stone/dirt tracks which deteriorate into dirt paths.

For the project team transport has to be by 4-wheel drive truck; for voluntary contact workers throughout the community it is by their own motorcycle, bicycle or on foot!! Navrongo, next largest town but with a higher percentage of HIV, is in the same region, close to the border with Burkina Faso.
