THE HOME BASED CARE PROJECT

The Atiamah Trust is currently supporting the Home Based Care Project, based in the Upper East Region of Ghana. This project supports 400 PLWHAs (People Living With HIV/AIDS) and 500 orphans in an area of 6,400 square miles. This area is the combined size of Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall. The project, which has no political or religious boundaries, is managed by the Catholic Diocese of Navrongo and Bolgatanga.

From its earliest days the project staff recognised that many people were living and dying in the most abject poverty and suffering immensely. They realized that the condition of these people and their relatives would be much improved by even the most basic care. Therefore the emphasis is on care in the community and the identification of those in need through a network of voluntary counsellors and contact workers. These 400 plus PLWHAs receive basic care from the project at monthly group meetings or through home visits. Group meetings are held in eleven different locations where a meal is provided and extra food for the coming month is handed out. For those who are ill medical records are updated and the appropriate vitamins and medicines are dispensed.

The project supports more than 500 orphans and children with sick parents. It supports them with payment of school fees and purchase of school uniforms. In an orphan family the eldest is encouraged to develop a skill to act as bread winner. Skill training is paid for, which includes the provision of equipment such as weaving looms, sewing machines and carpentry tools, together with a meal a day for the child throughout their training. .
