HISTORY

In late 2003 a UK Community Nurse worked with the Home Based Care project in the Upper East Region of Ghana. In November she heard about 2½ years old Atiamah.

"We were told about her by neighbours and when I met her no-one would touch her as her parents had died of AIDS. Her remaining family was so frightened by the disease that they locked her in a room."

Atiamah had effectively been abandoned, weighed 18 lb and was in a distressed state, with food pushed her way occasionally. The team immediately hospitalised her and she was then placed in an orphanage. £7 per month provided for her care but she was later diagnosed as having AIDS and sadly died in July 2004.

On return to the UK, the nurse was determined to take action and The Atiamah Trust was formed. The Trust aims firstly to support the work of the Home Based Care project based in Bolgatanga so that the team there can increase the number of trained workers, supply more drugs and nutrition, support orphan education and provide transport to enable more people to receive home based care.

The trust started fund raising in early 2004 and was registered as a charity in July of that year.
